Oftentimes, the punch rotates around the vertical axis while the die moves up. Compared to traditional forging, this process reduces the required force and the stress level in the die significantly. Therefore, cold forging becomes feasible in cases where traditional forging processes would require a hot forging operation. Drawbacks of orbital forging are longer process times, as is usual with incremental forging processes, and a more complex press design.
