Optimize joining processes for lightweight automotive

Lightweight design is the key problematic in the automotive industry. Manufacturers seek to develop mixed material car parts to reach this goal, and using metal sheets made of aluminum rather than made of steel.

Therefore, they have to choose the right joining technology adapted to their light metal sheets. They might have to develop their welding process to be in line with the material combinations and machines used, and to keep producing parts of quality without increasing their costs.

Conference on welding technologies

Organized every year by the Automotive Circle, the 2020 Joining in Car Body Engineering conference was held online from 29 September to 1st October.

The conference targeted engineers, OEM and suppliers of the automotive industry seeking innovations in efficiency, performance and applicability of joining technologies. Many subjects were addressed to understand new concepts in joining solutions, R&D projects, and so on.

This virtual conference offered two presentation formats:

  • Streamed live presentations
  • Video-on-demand presentations broadcasted one week before the event. During the conference sessions, these speakers were present online to discuss results and answer questions.

What can TRANSWELD® do about it?

Olivier Jaouen (Technical Product Manager) recorded a video-on-demand on our recent improvements regarding the finite element modeling of welding technologies available with our TRANSWELD® software.

  • “Innovative advancements in the FEM simulation applied to laser welding and resistance spot welding of automotive components"

Welding simulation as a solution

TRANSWELD® is a simulation software which allows to predict the thermomechanical behavior of an assembly during a welding process such as spot welding, laser welding, arc welding, etc.

This tool predicts defects (stresses, distortions), temperature evolution and the shape of the weld bead and allows process engineers to optimize their process.
