orbital forging

FORGE_orbital_forgingOrbital forging is used for producing axisymmetric or quasi axisymmetric parts. Usually, it is carried out as vertical forging process where the component is located between a lower die and a punch. In traditional forging the punch would move vertically, whereas in the case of orbital forging the punch axis is tilted to some degree thus reducing its contact area with the part.

Oftentimes, the punch rotates around the vertical axis while the die moves up. Compared to traditional forging, this process reduces the required force and the stress level in the die significantly. Therefore, cold forging becomes feasible in cases where traditional forging processes would require a hot forging operation. Drawbacks of orbital forging are longer process times, as is usual with incremental forging processes, and a more complex press design. FORGE® simulates orbital forging successfully and permits validation and optimization of forging sequences to improve forging yield and the parts’ quality.
