International Projects

TRANSVALOR has always been, in association with the CEMEF, an active participant in numerous projects funded by the European Commission. Some of the most significant technological advances of the latest years have come from these research programs.

ESA-MAP CCELMCC - since 2013
The main objective of the European Space Agency (ESA) project of the Microgravity Application Promotion (MAP) programme entitled Chill Cooling for the ElectroMagnetic Levitator in relation with Continuous Casting of steels (CCEMLCC) is to reach a better understanding of surface defects formed during processing of steels from the liquid state. The first difficulty is to conduct analyses of heat and mass exchanges coupled with thermomechanical deformation, in the context of multiple phase transformations typical of steel transformation paths. The second challenge is to gain experimental benchmark experiments in microgravity. The project results are expected to permit drawing consequences on industrial processing of steels. ESA-MAP CETSOL - since 1999
The general objective of the project is to improve our understanding of the physical phenomena that govern the formation of the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) in alloy solidification and its consequences for casting soundness. For that purpose, both experimental investigations of the formation of dendritic solidification and numerical models are being developed. MoFoWo2011 - from 2012 to 2013
Mobile Forging Workbench is a novel, client-server-based technology enabling mobile access to forging simulations. Key benefits are remote 3D visualization, data mining and simulation control using laptops or pads. MoFoWo will significantly increase the size of the forging simulation market. RINGING - from 2004 to 2008
Novel environment integrating process design and control for ring rolling of net-shape complex profile products. Annular component produced either by ring-rolling or similar processes are usualy critical structural parts. Compared to forged rings, rolled rings are often of superior quality as the process assures favorable grain flow. The main drawback is that often, due to out-of-roundness, conicity or waviness, 30% of the material is wasted. To address this issue, in this project, both numerical and experimental tools are going to be developed or improved in order to make possible a real optimization of the process. In this project, Transvalor specifically focuses both and actual description of the dies kinematics as well as the CPU time reduction. IMPRESS - from 2001 to 2004
Improvement of Precision in Forming by Simultaneous Modelling of Deflections in Workpiece-Die-Press System. Non symmetric conditions causes eccentrics loads on the press resulting in additional horizontal forces, bending and often torsional movements on the press frame. This results in different horizontal displacements between upper and lower die leading to loss of accuracy and furthermore life press decrease. The goal of this project is to include the die/press deflection within FORGE3. Partners: Cemef, Buurskov & Maskinfabrik, D.T.U., Iskra Avtoelektrika, Padova University, Smetek, Vaccari, Transvalor.

BLANKSIM - from 2000 to 2002
The goal here is to be able to simulate the blanking process. To achieve this, it is not only important to compute the cutting of the material but a special care has to be given to the precision of the elastic recovering after the trimming. Thanks to the unique fully elasto-plastic implementation of FORGE3 and its adaptative remeshing capabilities, users will have access to a really predictive blanking simulation package after the project will be finished. FORSYS - from 1998 to 2001
The object of the FORSYS project is to develop a new range of presses for both hot and cold forging. The development of these machines is being performed using FORGE2 and FORGE3 computations in order to optimize their use in real-life situations. Transvalor is closely associated not only to development of the presses design and use, but also to their commercialization: press buyers will be offered the possibility to buy a dedicated version of the FORGE2 package in order to take full advantage of their new tool. EFFORTS - from 1997 to 2000
The goal of this project was to improve rheological and friction models with respect to the forging process, in order to improve the accuracy of simulation results. These new and more precise models have been integrated into FORGE3 as soon as they became available. Partners: CEMEF, D.T.U., DELCAM, K.T.H., RAUFOSS, SIFCOR, TA.A Hydronics, TEKSID, Transvalor.

WINPAR - from 1997 to 1999
Within the WINPAR project an integrated software development environment for parallel computing targeting PC's connected by local networks or multi-processor PC's (Xeon, ...) running under WINDOWS NT has been developed. This project has allowed Transvalor to achieve a parallel version of FORGE3 running on personal computers. This version is now available to our customers. DRAMA - de 1997 to 1999
The DRAMA project objective is to develop an application programming technology which will allow complex industrial simulation codes such as FORGE3 to progress beyond the use of static mesh partitioning to dynamic load balancing. This project will give to Transvalor the necessary technology to increase the number of processors used effectively in the parallel version of FORGE3 (a reasonable limit is currently eight processors). French Projects

Closely related to the Ecole des Mines de Paris, a leading french engineering university, TRANSVALOR is naturally often implicated in research projects at the french national level, with numerous large-scale industrial participants. From these projects, TRANSVALOR has not only gained technological benefits, but also a deep insight on industrial needs and constraints.

ANR Chair Digimu – since 2017
Development of a unified modeling dedicated to multiscale simulation of microstructure evolution thanks to a new very promising full fileld FE approach and industrialization of the outcome of that work in the form of a FE software package called DIGIMU®. Modeling of recrystallization (ReX) and grain growth (GG), prediction of abnormal grain growth (AGG) and modeling of solid-solid phase transformations (SSPT) are mainly aimed. FUI SOFT-DEFIS - since 2017
The SOFT-DEFIS project aims to optimize the quality of ingots (structure, chemical homogeneity and compactness) especially by the addition of certain chemical elements or by external stresses during casting operations (germination-growth mechanism, size of solidification structures) in order to obtain the best manufacturing conditions in a timely manner optimized and thus capitalize the know-how of the members of the consortium. The general objective of the project is to further develop a stationary version of the FORGE® software dedicated to rolling and extrusion processes. Partners: Cemef, Transvalor, ArcelorMittal, AREVA, LISI Aerospace, Vallourec, Ugitech

FUI COMCEPT - since 2015
This project aims to optimize the production of steel alloys with very high added value by working on the reduction of inclusions that may be present at the end of solidification. The presence of cover powder, more commonly known as "cushions", is often the cause of these inclusions. The ambitious goal of this project is to propose an industrial tool for predicting the behavior of liquid cushions/metal taking into account the conditions of the casting process (commercialized numerical simulation tool) in order to reduce the cost and the time of high-value parts manufacturing in the nuclear and renewable energy industries. This represents a very important issue for French steelmakers which would allow them to stand out from other producers. FUI-Definit - 2013-2017
The NIT Challenge project is funded by the FUI (Fond Unique Interministériel) and was initiated to make deep nitriding a reliable and robust heat treatment process for critical mechanical parts. To achieve this objective, two innovative actions have been developed: - a high-performance deep nitriding treatment whose specification will be established to be applicable to all mechanical sectors, - a reliable simulation tool that will make it possible to understand the process interactions / product and thereby reduce development cycles. DEFISURF- from 2012 to 2016
The aim of the French National Research Agency’s project is to improve the coupling between designing and manufacturing of the forged parts. The objective is to integrate, since the forming stage, the consequences of the defects and the surface microstructural heterogeneities in the design of the industrial parts forged in such a way to better master and predict the in-service mechanical strength. FLUOTI- from 2011 to 2015
FLUOTI is a project of the French National Research Agency (ANR). The main objective is the simulation of the spin forming process of TA6V titanium at room temperature to produce long tubes by successive work hardening and local large deformation stages. OPTIPRO-INDUX- from 2011 to 2015
OPTIPRO-INDUX is a project of the French National Research Agency. The objective is to allow the weight reduction of mechanical parts highly solicited (typically crankshaft) by locally optimizing properties distribution (hardness, ductility) thanks to the use of induction heating coupled with quenching. COSINUS-REALISTIC- from 2010 to 2014
With COSINUS-REALISTIC, the aim of the French National Research Agency is to allow the heating calculation of several parts in a furnace. With this project, the strategy is to use a global mesh of the entire domain (eg: parts and furnace) and to have a global resolution on the whole heat equation coupled with the fluids mechanics. MONA LISA - from 2007 to 2010
The Monalisa project was initiated in early 2007. It aims to supply an effective solution for sizing fastening systems. The theoretical principle is to apply a loading condition onto the fastener taking in account the eventual stress distribution due to prior stages. The project focused initially on process like riveting, screwing, clinching. The project involves three main partners: the Cetim providing deep knowledge of the process, the Cemef/MinesParistech providing well-established scientific expertise and Transvalor as fully-recognized software editor dedicated to mechanical engineering and material processing. OPTIMAT - from 2002 to 2005
Optimization of processes of material transformation - RNTL project. Project OPTIMAT aims to help to design products with determined properties, as well from the geometric point of view as from the microstructural point of view, or its properties in service. Numerical techniques of optimization coupled with simulation software of material forming will be used. SIMULFORGE - from 2001 to 2005
The SIMULFORGE project, developed by the CETIM, gathers sixteen forging companies and Transvalor with the following three main objectives: 1) to enlarge the scope of the simulation in order to be able to simulate the whole manufacturing project (heating, forging, blanking, cooling, heat treatment). 2) To be able to predict the metallurgical status of the part at the end of the manufacturing. 3) To disseminate the use of the forging simulation among SME’s. To achieve the two first goals, twenty PhD or Post-Doctoral studies are going to be launched in six different laboratories. A specific care is given to heat treatment, trimming and rupture simulation. The third point has been addressed by completely redesigning the Graphical User Interface using the concept of virtual forging shop. [top]

OSC - from 2000 to 2004
Optimization of foundry casting systems. The OSC project gathers casting companies, research laboratories and Independent Software Vendors including Transvalor. Within this project the existing 3D FEM software THERCAST which is already able to compute the coupled thermomechanical analysis of the metal cooling in a set of dies will be completed by a filling module. In order to better predict the quality of the final part, metallurgical segregation and defect prediction will be added in both filling and cooling modules. ACR2 - from 1996 to 2000
The goal of the ACR2 project is to develop and industrialize numerical modelling tools to simulate the forging of arbitrarily shaped parts. This action is taken in order to favor the evolution of the trade towards a key technology which can provide an objective insight on the major mechanisms involved in forging. Transvalor products have greatly been enriched by the participation in this project. Specific industrial needs are fulfilled within this large framework and integrated in our software. GPI Fonderie - from 1995 to 1999
As its name suggests, this project has an innovative goal. The subject is the study of the simulation of the foundry process. Within the scope of the project, three existing software, namely R2, SOLID and THERCAST®, were to be improved and merged into one industrially usable 3D simulation tool of both the filling and cooling stages of the foundry process.
